Rachel Reeves becomes a landlord

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has recently become a landlord after moving to Downing Street, where she will live in the traditional residence of the Chancellor of the Exchequer at No. 11. According to the parliamentary register, she stands to earn more than £10,000 annually from renting out her previous London home. This rental income is shared with her husband, Nick Joicey, a senior civil servant in the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs .

Since her election in 2010, Reeves has claimed expenses for accommodation in her West Yorkshire constituency, amounting to £17,544.40 in the last full year reported. This includes costs for rent, council tax, and utility bills .

The average rent for a three-bedroom property in her former Lewisham area is around £1,800 per month, which could contribute to her income as a landlord. However, it remains unclear whether she will use her rental income to cover expenses for her constituency home .

This move into the landlord position comes amid scrutiny over housing issues, particularly within the Labour Party. Recently, a renters’ union in London called for Labour MP Jas Athwal to resign due to poor conditions in his rental properties .
