Are you ready for Making Tax Digital (MTD)?

HMRC Prepares Landlords for Mandatory MTD for Income Tax

HMRC has launched a campaign and toolkit to help landlords and sole traders prepare for the introduction of Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax, which becomes mandatory in stages from April 2026.

Key Dates and Thresholds

  • April 6, 2026:
    • Sole traders and landlords earning £50,000 or more in gross income from self-employment and property must use MTD.
  • April 6, 2027:
    • The threshold reduces to £30,000, capturing a broader range of taxpayers.

Voluntary Testing Phase

  • HMRC is encouraging accountants, agents, and their landlord clients to participate in the ongoing voluntary testing phase.
  • Early adoption allows users to familiarise themselves with the system and provides HMRC with feedback for refining the process before it becomes compulsory.

HMRC states:

“Signing up early allows agents and their clients to try the new process before it becomes mandatory. It will also help HMRC expand end-to-end testing to ensure our systems work as they should before April 2026.”

Toolkit and Support

The new HMRC toolkit offers practical resources, including:

  • Guidance documents explaining MTD requirements.
  • Checklists to help taxpayers stay compliant.
  • Videos demonstrating how to maintain digital records and submit quarterly updates.

Benefits of MTD

Craig Ogilvie, HMRC’s director of Making Tax Digital, highlights the advantages:

“Using digital records and submitting quarterly updates through software will reduce the chance of unintentional errors in customers’ tax returns, making it easier to pay the right amount of tax. It also means customers will have access to improved data to support their business planning and productivity.”

What Should Landlords Do Now?

  1. Assess Eligibility: Determine whether gross income meets the £50,000 threshold for 2026 (or £30,000 for 2027).
  2. Get Familiar with MTD Requirements: Use the HMRC toolkit to understand the steps needed for compliance.
  3. Join the Voluntary Testing Phase: Early participation offers valuable experience and feedback opportunities.
  4. Choose MTD-Compatible Software: Ensure digital records and quarterly updates can be managed seamlessly.

By preparing early, landlords can transition smoothly to the new system and potentially benefit from better tax management and business insights.
